-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TALKING LINUX FOR THE BLIND (TLB) The chief intention is to develop a cheap computer using
the technologies already developed within the open-source community.
This computer would be optimized for the blind and visually impaired
people allowing them to access the Internet and use the most common
computer applications. This system would not only give to a blind or
partially sighted user equal opportunities in communication with the
sighted people (through the web, e-mail etc.) but would also be used
as an active learning platform. Its final object would be to extend
the activities of the blind. As the first initiative in this field,
the system would be the basis for further development of similar systems
in Croatia. WEB PORTAL The object of this part of the project is to enhance
communication and offer to the blind and visually impaired people a
wider range of accessible information. It primarily means to provide
all the possibilities available on the web. That will give an opportunity
to the blind and visually impaired people to communicate on line and
share their experiences with the sighted people. The main part of the
data has already been moved or is currently being moved to the web and
the Internet and we want to make this information more accessible to
the blind. In addition to this, there appears to be more and more tasks
which can be done through the Internet and, consequently, one of the
aims of the project is the integration of the blind into the society.
DIGITAL COLLECTION DIGITAL COLLECTION is a collection of textbooks, literary
works and other written material in digital form which will be available
on line for the blind and partially sighted users. The collection will
be accessible on line and will also be available on CD-ROM. In the world
there are many digital book collections. The most popular connection
is Project Gutenberg collection. Our digital collection is the the first
digital book collection in Croatia. The collection will consist of the
titles available in the Croatian library for the blind and of the text
collection prepared by the Faculty of philosophy, University of Zagreb.
INTERNET ACCESS Finally, one of the goals is to make the Internet accessible
for the blind and partially sighted users for it is a starting point
for any further development. Our opinion is that this service should
be free of charge for our users. In accordance to the upper statement,
we are establishing Internet Service Providing within the Croatian association
for the blind. |
